Back Off Cupids - "S/T"

Here's another John Reis post for you. Are you sick of them yet? Of course not, because no one reads this shit except me. Anyway, I can't help it...Reis is a wicked musician that should go down in rock history for putting out some of the most progressive and genre defining music of our generation. The guy deserves his props. Originally recorded in '94 (to score an unrealized movie called "Drama in the Lunar Womb") Back Off Cupids is Speedo's solo project that was released by Drunken Fish Records in 2000. The project is a mostly instrumental work featuring Reis' gangly, melody bending, guitar work. I think fans of Drive Like Jehu can particularly dig this stuff, and will find strong similarities between the two bands. It has a dark edge to it, and it rocks. Amoeba rocks as well for having it used for 10 dollars. Who ever sold it must have been a fiend hard up for some smack, because this stuff (in my humble opinion) is gold.

Nisennenmondai - "Tori" ep

I saw these three ladies from Tokyo play last night at the Elbo Room, and my ears are still screaming at me for putting them through such enjoyable torture. Despite mid song equipment issues, Nisennenmondai left me stunned, but before I knew it they were saying goodnight. I was ready for more when they walked off stage. Hopefully next time they visit the states they will be headlining their own tour. Nisennenmondai will definitely test your listening ability... you'll either hate it or love it. Either way, the drummer (besides being hotter then fire) beats her kit like a red headed step child. The girl is buff. Their sound is similar to Yoko Ono's "The Plastic Ono Band", but with a lot less crazy lady screeching and more guitar-rock experimentation. Good stuff. Listen to "Baikawa" from their three song, plus one hidden track, ep "Tori" and be amazed (or confused). You should check out their WEBSITE while your at it.

So long! Thanks for the tunes.

This post is kind of a bitter one for me, because, as you may already know, one of the best damn rock bands ever to grace a stage is calling it quits. My hometown heroes Rocket From the Crypt are playing their final show on Halloween, and guess what? I won't be there; considering how I now live in SF and I am one broke as bitch, but damn! I really want to go. Sucks to be me. I'm hoping someone will be selling a bootleg recording of it on ebay someday, or maybe Swami (in his infinite wisdom) will have it filmed and released on dvd. He should hire me to do it! If you have a chance, get your ass in gear and buy tickets for that show. You know it's going to be a balls to the wall rock extravaganza. One for the history books... to expect anything less from RFTC's going away party would be a very deadly sin. Yes, it is going to be a party. In case you don't know how rad RFTC is check out my SCREAM DRACULA SCREAM post and/or check out THIS great post by Pete from Throwaway Style. Also for your consumption I’m posting a few songs from 1991’s “Paint as a Fragrance”.

Scare your neighboors; play it loud.
